I then put a screw into the adjoining planks about 3″ from the scarf, just for added strength. My personal preference is for 45 degree scarfs and not butt blocks, so in order to get the curvatures right I’m just clamping a speed square flush to the top of the plank and using that as a guide against my saw. ![]() I didn’t want all my scarfs lining up in the same place on the hull, so I’m moving them around from the beam on plank 1, to the fore quarter on plank 2, back to the aft quarter on plank 3, and so on. Scarfing planks is a must do, given the board lengths I got. Later I was getting about 3 plank seams from every 185 mL cartridge, and that includes coverage between planks and the 15 ribs. Last step is to sink the screws and do the edge nailing to the transom, both of which draw in a small amount of epoxy when they go in, a bonus for added strength. My picture below shows too much epoxy – I ended up wiping away some of that. I then use Totalboat Thixo 2:1 for the edge glue it only takes a very small bead to get 100% coverage between the planks. 1992 Great Lakes Building Company Whitehall wooden row boat. My work sequence is – I clamp up and dry fit the planks together, then drill my pilot holes and countersinks, working my way aft from the stem (I consider the stem fit to be the most critical). ![]() The plastic bar clamps just can’t close the gaps enough. They make it much easier to work the boards down to a nice, flush fit against one another. I would however recommend 8″ worm gear clamps or even bar clamps (metal). From the sheer line working up, they didn’t need to be steamed I found they can be bent in and then made flush with their neighbors just fine with clamps. ![]() But the plans call for much smaller planks to be edge glued against one another, so that’s what I’m going with. Most of the pictures I’d found from restorations showed wide planks, some as much as 6″, about the same as the garboards. I started at the sheer line, so that any cheater strips would end up below the waterline. I started planking the past couple of weeks.
